Staying busy in the off-season

While my last blog post was an adieu to Summer 2024, turns out that I’ve found some opportunities to stay active. This past week I was invited to speak to the entire 3rd grade class (300+ students!) at Henderson-Ward Elementary in Starkville, MS. I don’t always perform for groups of that size (thank goodness I have a PA system and a wireless microphone), but it was a really great show.

Thank you again for coming! All day yesterday and today I have been constantly stopped by students giddy with excitement to talk about the awesome presentation! Christina Vance, 3rd grade teacher, HWS Elementary

Two of my boys attended HWS in the past — it’s always a pleasure to give a little back to my community. Of course, the 3rd-grade students gave back to me as well. A package of thank-you cards was delivered to me the next day. Not only were those touching, but they helped me in teaching. That is, I featured several cards at the top of my PH1023 (Physical Science Survey II) class as a way of encouraging my own students (some of whom are pre-service teachers) to find a way to share what they know with others.

Those in the Tupelo area can catch my act at the upcoming Dudie Burger Festival on Saturday, October 12 (two sets –10:30 am and 2:00 pm). I’ll be playing some weather songs as well as some cover tunes with my family band, “Henry & The Dynamite.”

And I’m already looking ahead at Summer 2025. This week I’ll be sending out emails to libraries across the state. Because I am an artist on the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Artist Roster, qualifying non-profit organizations can write a grant so that up to 50% of my performance fee will be covered by MAC. The deadline for grant applications is November 1.
